This ill populated town is surrounded by the foothills of the Himalayas consisting of snow peaked mountains, lush green sloped mountains and glaciers. To get a feel of the local community called the Lachenpas, one can visit Lachen Gompa. This area is confined or restricted for foreigners but special permissions and passes can be obtained. Located at 8400 ft there are not many options to visit in Lachen. But there are few places which are very
pleasing to the human eyes and shutterbugs.
Chopta Valley is one of the best places for photographers. It is considered a photographer’s paradise. Lachen is a very exciting and thrilling place for hikers. There are a lot of thrilling places to trek from Lachen. The Kanchenjunga National Park (a.k.a Green Lake) trail is very tantalizing and intriguing. Other treks include trails leading to Thangu Valley, Tso Lhamu lakes, Yumthang Valley to name a few. There are some beautiful lakes to see in Lanchen. As mentioned, the Tso Lhamu Lake which is a beautiful sight to look at the end of a thrilling trek.
The Gurudongmar Lake in Lanchen is considered as a very sacred lake of the Himalayan Region and it is made accessible for Hindus and Buddhists only. The best time to visit Lachen as per Sikkim Tourism is durn March-May and from October-December.
