We take a look at some of the must visit places on Gangtok, Sikkim package.
The Rumtek Monastery is one of the oldest Tibetan monasteries in the world. It is located on a hill 20 odd kilometres outside of Gangtok. It is one of the most significant and largest monasteries in Sikkim. The monastery is home to some of the rarest Buddhist objects and artefacts in the world.
While you are visiting here, you could also visit the Nehru Botanical Garden which is a little further away, where you will tropical as well as temperate plants apart from some exotic orchids.
Tashi View Point
Located around 8 kilometres outside of Gangtok, Tashi View point offers some spectacular views of the Himalayas and the Kanchenjunga in particular. The view of the sunrise from here is highly recommended. The sun shines on the snow-capped mountains giving them a stunning orange tinge.
For a nominal fee, you can use the telescopes mounted here to improve your view of the Himalayas. You can also visit the Bakthang waterfalls while you are at the Tashi View Point.
Cable Car Ride
The Cable Car Ride is one of the best ways to get a great bird’s eye view of Gangtok. This is a kilometre long ride with three stops and you can disembark at any of the three stations on the way, but we highly recommend you go for the complete joyride. If you are lucky on your packages for Sikkim Gangtok and the weather is good, you will also be able to see the Kanchenjunga from here.
Nathu La and Tsomgo lake
Nathu La Pass is a great day trip from Gangtok. Nathu La Pass is the main entry to Tibet from India. The road from Gangtok to Nathu La passes through the beautiful Tsomgo Lake. This pass is close to the border and you will need appropriate permits to get here. In fact, one is so close to the border here that you might even be able to spot a few Chinese soldiers from here.
