How to reach Zermatt from various destinations?
The nearest airport to Zermatt is in Geneva which is about 244 kilometres. It generally gets busy and expensive with the flights during peak season as there may be many may ski travellers. Next option would be Zurich airport which is 248 kilometres away. Both these airports are also well connected to the Swiss railways. A train to Zermatt from the airport takes approximately three hours.
As Zermatt is a car-free zone and if you want to travel by bus or drive, you can park your vehicles at Tasch which is 7 kilometres away from Zermatt. From that point, you can commute through a train to Zermatt, which is approximately three and a half hours from Geneva and four and a half hours from Zurich by road.
Taking the train is the most convenient way to reach the village Zermatt as driving is not allowed when you reach the city. Zermatt is linked to the Swiss Rail Network, and there are many direct trains from both Zurich and Geneva airports to Zermatt every hour. As Zermatt is a car-free zone, you can’t drive through the streets of the village and also reaching there becomes quite tricky, so taking the train is the only available option. You could buy a Swiss Rail pass on arriving, as it is the most economical way to travel within the city. Children up to 16 years travel for free by rail services.
